JCM Cigarette Pack Collection

Lola Softpack     -     Camel Filters Light Box     -     Diana Special Mild Box

INTRODUCTION

Jas has collected the foil from cigarette packs off and on for many years.  The idea of making use of this beautiful material came from the American Designer, Richard Rummonds, with whom Jas worked with at OCEPA in Quito, Ecuador (1965-66).  Richard collected enough silver cigarette foil to wall-paper his entire dining room.  In 1968 Jas covered a chair and bookcase with silver foil from cigarette packs.  This material has also appeared in a few of his paintings and more recently in his Barcelona Collage Series.

In 1994, while in Bacelona, Jas began a on-going investigation, under the auspices of the Specific Research Institute, of identifying and cataloging the different colours, tones and textures of foil used in cigarette packs.  Upon obtaining a specimen, the foil is mounted on mat board and the face or back of the pack, which contained the foil, is then affixed over the foil (the foil forming a 'frame' for the face or back).  The resulting 'tiles' are being used in various exhibitions and art works.  Donations to this ongoing collection are much appreciated.
