Jas' book In Situ is reviewed in Umbrella; a leading newsletter concerned with contemporary visual art. In the
section of Artist Book Reviews (page 86), In Situ is described as "a volume devoted to brilliant ../../photos captured with a
digital
camera." The review goes on to state that "The 14 different ../../photos
are
definitely a commentary on the 20th century detritus that society leaves in
using the goods of the earth, yet the ../../photos are in glowing color and are
brilliantly composed."
November 26 - January 12, 2001 - Vancouver
Gotcha! Digital ../../photos by Jas W Felter, Mitzi M Kanee, Gregg Simpson and Bill
Thomson
are exhibited at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre as one of a series of exhibitions sponsored by Avenue for-des Arts Society.
November - Montevideo
Three of Jas' artistamps are reproduced in colour in the artistamp zine Correro del Sur/Southern Post #4, published by Clemente Padin in Uruguay.
October 14 - November 19 - Manitou Springs Colorado
A digital image from the In Situ series by Jas was selected by the Jury for inclusion in the all digital art
exhibition bit by bit held in the Main gallery of the Business of Art Centre.
October 13 - 30 - Albertville, Switzerland
A new sheet of artistamps with 28 digital portraits of Artistamp Creators is included in the exhibition Mail Art et timbres d'artistes « En faveur de la chose écrite » at Le Dôme Médiathèque in Albertville. The sheet of stamps and mail art envelope by Jas are included
in the full-colour 66 page catalogue (on file).
October 6 - 28 - Victoria, BC
A selection of artistamp sheets by Jas are included in the exhibit The Popular Art of Postal Parody, International Artistamps from the Collection of Anna Banana, at Open Space. Several of Jas' artistamps are reproduced in the Arts section of the
Victoria Times Colonist October 7th issue (on file).
October 1st to 15th - Sevilla, Spain
Jas is included in the Exposición de Arte Postal on exhibition at El Taller de Zenón. The list of participants is on file.
June - Mexico
Jas' artistamp commemorating Liaka, the first dog in space is reproduced in an
article entitled Arte Postal - el medio como un fin, by Alejandra Mora Velasco, in the magazine ViceVersa, No. 85, page 60.
May - June 2000 - Zierikzee, Holland
Artistamps by Jas are included in the exhibition ARTISTAMPS at the Galerie Galerij in Zierikzee, Holland. The exhibition was organized by international mail
artist Johan Everaers, aka Ever Arts. Illustrated catalogue and press
clippings are on file.
May 2nd - CBC Radio One
Jas in interviewed by Mary Lou Finlay, one of Canada's most highly respected
broadcast journalists and the host of CBC Radio One's AS IT HAPPENS about his
participation in the Moscow project Sewers of the World, Unite!.
April 28th - The Vancouver Sun
A color photo of Jas' head on a manhole cover is included in the society column
of Malcom Parry (page A3) along with brief notes of his participation in the Sewers of the World, Unite! project in Moscow and his own Smoking Room project.
April 27th - The Vancouver Sun
Under the headline "West Van's sewer covers make artistic statement in Moscow"
is a large color photo of Jas laying on a manhole cover. The caption reads
"STREET ART: No, this man has not been run over by traffic. he is Jas Felter,
West Vancouver artist, posing on one of the sewer covers he photographed for an
international exhibition held in Moscow. (page B5) The accompanying article
describes Jas' participation in the Sewers of the World, Unite! project in Moscow (on file).
April 27th - The Province, Vancouver
A colour photo by David Clark showing Jas examing a West Vancouver manhole
cover is placed above the headline "Manhole mandalas make it in Moscow". The
accompaning article contains an interview with Jas by Province Staff Reporter Greg Middleton, page A9 (on file).
April 14th through 23rd - Moscow
Digital photographs by Jas are exhibited at the Manege Art Salon in Moscow. The photographs of West Vancouver manhole covers are part
of an international exhibition launching the Global Mail Art Project Sewers of the World, Unite!, created by two Moscow artists; Natalie Lamanova and Alexander Kholopov.
Jas is also an consultant on the project which is supported by ARTINFO,
Russia’s leading internet site for the Visual Arts. Lamanova and
Kholopov are continuing to collecting digital, photographic and video
../../photos of
sewer covers from around the world. These ../../photos are presented on
the
World Wide Web as they are received.
December 16th through May 2000 - Oaxaca, Mexico
Artistamps by Jas will be well represented in the exhibition Arte Postal hacia el nuevo milenio(Mail Art towards the New Millennium) at the Museo de Filatelia de Oaxaca. The Philately Museum (MUFI) is located in the historic centre of
Oaxaca, an historic and cultured Mexican city. It is situated in the
ex Convento de Santo Domingo (ex Santo Domingo's Convent). The museum has recently been rebuilt and
given the touch of the ancient houses of the city. It fulfills the
conservation necessities of the philatelic collections and has established mail
art as a permanent program.
December 2nd - February 4th, 2000 - Barcelona
The first works resulting from the Jas Millennium Project will be exhibited at the Galeria d'Art ZERO (Canvis nous 1) in Barcelona as part of an international collective exhibition
entitled Year Zero. The exhibit is conceived as a celebration of the new millennium.
The three works by Jas, each measuring 22 x 22in., are constructed of
tiles made from acid free material, empty cigarette packs, and cigarette foil
collected in Barcelona in recent years. As well the grout for the tiles is
made from the ash of Jas' smoked cigarettes. The works are protected
from colour fading and moisture by a coating of MAXIM XE.
November 12th - January 19th, 2000 - Boston
Jas is represented by seventeen artistamp sheets in the exhibition Stamp Art and Artists Stamps at The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley College. In addition to the artistamp sheets, visitors will be able to view The Jas Cyberspace Museum and its Artistamp Gallery on CD Rom. JCM has loaned additional artistamp sheets from its
collection by Donald Evans (USA), Clemente Padin (Uruguay), Vittorie Baroni
(Italy), Carl Chew (USA), Natalie Lomanova and Alexander Kholopov (Russia), and
Jose Carlos Soto and Pere Sousa (Spain). Some of the other artists
represented in the exhibit are Ed Varney and Anna Banana of Canada and Reid
Wood, Susan Dworski and Elenor Kent of the USA. In addition the
exhibition includes historical postage stamps, topicals, and works by Bradbury
Thompson and some contemporary designers. Curator of the exhibit is
Bonnell Robinson. The exhibition's reception is on the Thursday the
November 18th from 5-7pm. The Art Institute of Boston is located at 700 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02215. The
exhibition was filmed by PBS (Boston) prior to its opening.
